Teaching Your Dog to Sit

Why: Teaching your dog to sit will give you greater control over your dog. In addition it will help you correct many behavioral problems. For example, if your dog jumps on you when you return home, just teaching your dog to sit is a very effective and humane way to correct the behavior, since your dog cannot sit and jump at the same time. Hence, the problem is resolved. How:

  1. Stand in front of your dog. Hold a tasty food treat in your hand at the dog's nose level. Let the dog know that you have something special for him.

  2. Raise your hand slightly over the dogs nose. Slowly move your hand forward between the dog's ears, toward his tail (parallel to the ground).

  3. Your dog will follow your hand with the food treat and will fall into the sit position.

  4. The second your dog sits tell him, "Good dog" in a happy and soft tone of voice; immediately give him the treat (while he is still sitting).

  5. Repeat this exercise 3 - 5 times.

  6. Introduce the verbal cue or command, "sit" only when you know for sure that your dog will follow your hand movement.
