Senior Wellness

Our pets are now living longer due to advances in veterinary medicine, nutrition, client education and pet owner compliance. The Doctors' and staff of Sarasota Animal Hospital have seen a dramatic increase in the treatment of elderly pets over the last few years. Senior pets have unique medical needs compared to younger animals. We are now able to successfully treat and manage such disease conditions as Diabetes, Kidney Disease, Hypothyroidism, Hyperthyroidism, Arthritis, Cancer, Heart Disease, Cognitive Dysfunction Disorder, and Dental Disease. In order to be able to help us detect these various diseases, we have developed a Canine and Feline Senior Wellness Program.

The goal of our Senior Wellness Programs is to maximize the quality and quantity of elderly pets through:

  1. Educating clients about signs of illness in pets so that they can report any problems to us promptly.
  2. Educating clients about proper care of senior pets (dogs seven years of age and older and giant breed dogs five years and older, and cats seven years and older).
  3. Completing a physical examination of your dog and cat at least every 6 months.
  4. Obtaining baseline values for bloodwork, urinalysis, radiographs, and EKGs, and monitoring the values over time to detect disease conditions early when they are easier to treat.
  5. Developing a specific plan of action to deal with any medical problem that is diagnosed.
  6. Informing you about strategies and products that may help your senior pet.
