The Missing Pets Bureau Are you aware that every year more than 26,000 dogs and cats become temporary guests at Hillsborough County Animal Services? What happens to the animals at the shelter? According to Animal Services, animals without tags are held for seven days and animals with license tags are held 14 days. However, less than 6% are reunited with their owners and the majority of animals are euthanized with a painless injection. (source: Hillsborough County Animal Services) What can you do to make sure that if your pet gets lost you will be reunited? LICENSE YOUR PET Make sure that all of your pets are properly licensed. Your veterinarian has procedures in place to license each of your pets each year and provide the required rabies vaccinations. Very few people put tags on their cats, yet cats comprise 1/3 of the residents at the animal shelter, and less than 1% are reunited with their owner. SAFETY ID TAGS & most veterinarians have information on how to get an engraved ID tag for your pet at a reasonable cost. MICROCHIP YOUR PET Many veterinarians now have the ability to make a one-time simple, painless, and safe microchip injection which will identify your pet in a nationwide computerized recovery network. Once a pet is identified with a microchip, it is easy to identify and expedite the return of lost or stolen pets to their rightful owners. The one-time service gives you and your family a lifetime of protection. DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHS Some veterinarians now take free digital photographs of each pet under their care. The digital photograph is part of the pets permanent record and is updated annually. In addition to having the photograph on the pets file at the clinic, the veterinarian has the ability to send the photo instantaneously through the internet to insure proper identification. DONT LOSE YOUR LOVED ONES FOREVER It is the responsibility of every pet owner to insure the safe return of their pet if it becomes lost. Today there are a number of simple and painless methods available to identify a pet in the event it gets away from its family. Dont let your pet become a statistic.....there are over 22,000,000 animals put to sleep every year.
