Integrative Veterinary Medicine: The Journey of Healing with Our Animal Friends Healing is a natural process of life, available to all beings, two-footed or four-footed. It comes from within and occurs in our bodies on a daily basis. Healing literally means “moving towards wholeness”. To heal is to restore a unique balance to the body that improves overall well-being, whether a specific problem is present or not. Curing concentrates on eliminating specific problems, usually by suppressing symptoms with medications or removing them surgically. This often fails to address the underlying factors that contributed to the condition in the first place. Curing and the restoration of physical function may, or may not, accompany healing. One may be healed completely and yet go on to die from the illness. From the whole perspective of healing as a journey, healing and death are not mutually exclusive. To assist and encourage the healing process, all aspects of an animal’s life must be considered: diet, lifestyle, emotional state, environmental influences, relationship and bond to their human counterpart, and past history. Different modalities can then be utilized to stimulate the animal’s innate healing ability to bring the body into its unique state of balance. The range of modalities is vast, including everything from medications, acupuncture, herbs, wholesome nutrition, surgery, massage, and numerous other energetic systems. Each individual is traveling on a unique path and will require their own individualized protocol to help them regain their sense of “wholeness”. By working in partnership, the practitioner, animal and animal’s human companion can embark upon the journey together. Presented by Dr. Josie Beug, Five Element Animal Wellness, 305.987.8684.
