Hyperactivity in Dogs

Hyperactivity is one of the most common problems found in dogs. You might have a dog that has energy at all hours of the day, with no hope of settling down. Your dog may greet people at the door by jumping up on them or running around. Destructive behavior, not coming when called, and anxious whining are all behaviors associated with hyperactivity.

Hyperactivity begins at puppyhood and will not go away with aging; they can even become more active. Causes of hyperactivity can be genetics or poor breeding. Other factors can be sodium intake and lack of obedience training. Hyperactivity can be controlled with exercise and a solid obedience program. Treat training and group classes can make it difficult for a hyper dog to establish an obedience routine. For example, consider how your dog behaves when you have a treat in your hand or another playful pup is nearby. Chances are they get more excited, making it impossible for them to focus on learning. The dog owner then becomes frustrated and thinks the dog is unable to learn. A dog like this needs to begin with one-on-one training in a distraction-free-environment. This enables the dog to focus on the task at hand and show greater control of their hyperactivity.

I invite you to take the first step in building a healthy relationship with your pet.
