The Healing Powers Of Water Everyone nowadays recognizes the importance of exercise to maintain optimal health. But why is swimming one of the best types of exercise for humans and dogs? Swimming is a low impact exercise and is almost injury free because there is no pounding of the body. Muscles work harder and become more flexible. Water’s supportive nature allows joints that might otherwise be limited by an injury or arthritis to move through a complete range of motion. While swimming, opposing muscle groups work with each stroke, allowing the body to develop in a more balanced way. The pressure and turbulence caused by movements produce a massaging effect on the body. Virtually all muscles of the body are employed, bringing nurturing blood to all areas and producing a flushing effect that removes toxins and rejuvenates every tissue. Dogs recovering from knee, hip, leg and back surgeries are able to exercise much earlier and recover faster. Limbs that are overworked trying to compensate for the affected one and loss of muscle tone are two negative side effects of crate rest and limited mobility after surgery. These conditions will be immensely alleviated and benefit from relaxation, stress relief and better quality sleep after a water workout. Because a higher percentage of fat is used as energy while swimming, weight loss is a bonus benefit. Pets suffering from degenerative diseases like hip and elbow displasia and arthritis will also benefit immensely. Owners are delighted with the increased mobility and well-being of their pets. They all agree that a swimming program has added many quality years to their beloved companion’s lives.
