THE BIRDS EYE VIEW

Our parrot friends are pretty incredible creatures. Dealing with some of their behavioral issues, however, can prove to be challenging. This is because although we keep parrots as pets in our homes, they are not a "domestic" or "domesticated" pet such as a dog or cat. This means that they are still "programmed" with some behaviors that are more appropriate for their natural environment rather than our living room. It is important to have the proper expectations of your companion parrot by understanding which behaviors you can change and which you cannot.

Any behavior that is unusual or excessive should always be investigated two ways:

  • By analyzing your home environment
  • Through a medical evaluation

Parrots are inherently cautious creatures and sometimes changes in their environment can cause them to react in ways we can’t anticipate. They tend to rely heavily on their sense of sight. Something that escapes us may be quite significant to them. Our avian friends are also very "tuned in to" us as their owners and will respond to changes they perceive in us whether its a new hairdo or stress from the job. With any significant variations in your parrots behavior, it may be necessary to play detective and ask yourself;

"What’s different now"
