The Golden Years
Our pets are living longer now because of better veterinary care, nutrition, and husbandry. As our pets age, they become more at risk to develop such diseases as periodontal disease, diabetes, hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, epilepsy, heart failure, liver or kidney disorders, and adrenal gland disorders.
The number one goal of senior wellness care is to prolong the life of our pets with quality. The number one way to reach this goal is to be able to identify internal medical or surgical disorders before the external signs become apparent to the owner or the veterinarian.
A thorough senior wellness evaluation should begin with a detailed history. The pet’s complete medical, surgical, preventative care, and dietary history should be documented. This is then followed by a complete and thorough physical examination.
Depending on the findings, your veterinarian may recommend a complete blood count, chemistry profile, urine analysis, intestinal parasite exam, an EKG, ultra-sound, and chest and abdominal radiographs.
A diagnosis can then be correctly made and the appropriate treatment plan can be decided upon by you and your veterinarian. This treatment plan may include a change of diet, special medications, or even surgical intervention.
This level of senior care will allow your pet to live a longer, more quality filled life.
