No Means No-Thing It is the first thing we teach our new member of the family. No jump, no bark, no chew, no bite etc. By using no for everything, it soon comes to mean nothing or worse. It could create fear, mistrust, or other improper behaviors. Instead of concentrating on what not to do, lets teach them what to do. No jump turns to Sit. They cant possibly sit and jump at the same time. No bark actually has two parts, Hush and believe it or not Speak. No chew becomes, Get It, referring to their toys or other proper chew items. (Not recommended for slippers or ham sandwiches in the beginning). No bite gets no hands. In other words, if the teeth are on your hands then the hands go away. Your pets cant bite something that is not there. Their only punishment is not getting the loving by any hands, until they learn what and where their proper chew items are. As a rule, ignore or redirect the inappropriate behavior and teach the positive, socially acceptable one. You and your canine friend will be happier for it.
