12 Things Your Veterinarian Never Told You

  1. Behavior problems like urinating, barking, and biting cause more than 40,000 animal deaths per year in Hillsborough County alone. MORE than all the diseases we vaccinate for, COMBINED!- ask us if you need counseling in behavior.

  2. Undiagnosed and untreated dental disease KILLS too many pets. Dental disease is the most common disease of all dogs & cats over 3 years old - some of the miniature breeds already develop gingivitis and periodontal disease before age 2 - call us to find out how to prevent this problem early with non-prescriptions, before it requires anesthesia.

  3. Hillsborough County is RAMPANT with HEARTWORM disease in dogs, cats, and ferrets - you cannot afford to not use a good heartworm preventative.

  4. Did you know, different age groups and pets with different medical problems need specific diets to prolong life - the pet store won't tell you.

  5. Lots of skin parasites and intestinal parasites are contagious to humans. We need to teach you how to avoid contact, especially if you have kids.

  6. Liver disease, heart disease, and kidney disease are common in pets over 5 years of age and are seldom picked up in brief examinations. Insist on your veterinarian doing THOROUGH head to toe exams at least annually and consider additional tests BEFORE symptoms occur.

  7. Did you know that low level (non-symptomatic) toxicities are common in household pets of all species, by insecticides, heavy metals, plants, and fumes. Get educated on common sources of poisons.

  8. Many allergies CAN be treated successfully with the right combination of non-prescription or over-the-counter supplements, shampoos and topical medicines. Though ONLY after being correctly diagnosed; the culprit removed, and bacterial, fungal, and/or mange infections in your pet's skin COMPLETELY cured by your veterinarian - DO NOT SETTLE for dangerous long-acting cortisone shots - POOR MEDICINE.

  9. Many veterinarians use antioxidants, vitamins, natural immune enhancers, and natural arthritis drugs on themselves and their pets, yet they don't teach you, the client, which work and which don't.

  10. Exotics - Did you know that exotic pets need annual check-ups, too?

  11. Did you know that after 3 years of age ferrets need twice a year check-ups because they become extremely prone to cancers and hormonal disturbances.

  12. Unfortunately, most birds, reptiles, and other exotics only see a veterinarian after they get sick and most of them will die. Don't let it happen to you. Call now. Call for a free subscription to our newsletters and a copy of "How to Choose A Veterinarian."
