Pound Pups First lets evaluate why dogs wind up in shelters. According to the American Humane Society the #1 reason dogs are returned after adoption is behavior problems. I see two main problems. One is picking the wrong dog to adopt, and the other is behavior problems no addressing. Its heart-breaking to see dogs returned over & over for the same dilemma. The dog is eventually destroyed for a simple problem that has never been recognized. Lets start with picking a dog. Do not go to a breeder or shelter and let your heart do the shopping! Emotionally picking a cute dog that satisfies that immediate need is usually a mistake. Two weeks later, barking, chewing, the responsibility, financial and time consuming, now overwhelm that feeling of temporary pleasure you had at first. Now back goes the dog to the pound. Now possibly tat cute dog is euthanased because you were the third family to return the dog. This cycle continues all of the time around the country. Lets break the cycle, be responsible. A professional can help evaluate what your needs are, environment, finances, before going to the pound/breeder. Now you have an idea of what you want. Educate yourself. Dogs do not always act the same in the kennel as they will when you bring the in your home. The dog that comes from a nice home where they were pampered and well taken care of might act fearful, aggressive, skittish or even because of being in the kennel, is so different, scary and traumatizing. A dog that acts happy, outgoing, might be used to a kennel, maybe because thats all its ever known. A good training facility should be happy to help you in picking the right dog for you.
