Crate Anxiety

Crate training is the preferred method of teaching dogs the rules of the house. It is not only useful in potty training but also good for preventing bad habits of all kinds from forming. The crate should be in a place where your dog can retreat for comfort and security. Your dog should see it as his or her den when he/she is confined, not isolated or imprisoned, as if being punished.

The introduction of a crate can be a pleasant canine experience. When done properly your dog will enjoy going in on his/her own accord, and may even choose to sleep in there when you're home. Crate training if done improperly can lead to crate anxiety. Angeldogs™ can teach you all you need to know to prevent crate anxiety and help your dog enjoy his cozy den.

There are some dogs that will experience crate anxiety even if the crate was introduced and used properly. Crate Anxiety is beyond normal temper tantrums that can be ignored. This is when the dog does physical harm to himself when left in the crate for any length of time,

Regardless of the cause, the solution depends on the personality of the dog and your home situation. Using playpens with open tops or sectioning off a safe area for him/her using baby gates are good alternatives to crates. Having a good walk or playtime before your dog is put in the crate may do wonders to relax him or her. Chewing on a stuffed “Kong” in the crate or confined area keeps dogs occupied for hours and helps relieve stress. Sometimes having a professional Pet Sitter come to visit in the middle of the day may be just the ticket.

The best way, however, to get rid of crate anxiety is to get rid of the crate. Angeldogs™ will help you to teach your dog how to properly behave in your home outside of the crate, eliminating the need for a crate.
